Contemporary Collecting: DIY Publishing

This recording features Jose Guerrero and Miarosa Ciallella n a digital conversation about the world of DIY publishing as they focus on their respective areas of study, real estate flyers and zines. Guerrero’s work centers specifically on urban textual production in the context of gentrification while Ciallella is interested in zines as an avenue for resisting technocracy, as well as the ethical implications of institutionalizing and archiving zines. Though seemingly at odds, both projects raise questions about recent changes in printing technologies, distribution networks, and their links to social movements. The intersections of their work lie in the importance of materiality in the digital age and the ways that print objects resist and reflect contemporary histories.
